What does GROK mean and what is its origin?

“Grok,” a word popularized by Robert A. Heinlein in his 1961 science fiction novel Stranger in a Strange Land, means to understand something thoroughly and intuitively, often to the point of merging with it. Its etymology is unique; Heinlein invented the word, drawing inspiration from a Martian language in the novel.
